Recreation Complex Renovation
November 2014-Februrary 2015
The Brentwood Recreation Complex’s 20-year-old roof was replaced in late 2014/early 2015. Leaking and weathered sections of both slanted and flat roofing surface were repaired over the course of 3 months by Shay Roofing Company. The roof over the entire 42,362 square-foot complex had rock removed, overflow drains put in, and new sealant and roofing tiles installed. The roof was replaced one section at a time so patrons and staff were able to use the entire complex throughout the roof replacement process.
Destruction of interior walls, flooring, doorways, windows and the Ice Arena refrigeration system and sub-flooring began in early April. This month-long process was crucial for installing updated utility lines and creating new ADA accessible floor plans.
The demolition phase of the renovation is currently complete.
Community Center Renovation:
The Community Center portion of the Recreation Complex will be renovated to include a larger office space to accommodate staff members, a larger restroom and lobby area, reconfigured multi-purpose rooms, a new kitchen facility, a fitness studio, and complete ADA accessibility. In addition, the concrete sub-floor slab will be replaced, along with the underlying micro-piles to ensure stability of the concrete slab.
Utility lines, insulation, and drywall and are now completely installed in the Community Center. Over the next two weeks, contractors will be working on painting walls and ceilings, installing light fixtures, finishing wiring for electrical and fire alarms. By mid-August, flooring, bathroom fixtures and doors will be completed. The last week of August will be used to execute finishing touches, including appliances, furniture, and signage.
Ice Arena Renovation:
Renovation occurring within the Ice Arena will include a new, more sustainable refrigeration system, along with new dasher boards and improved entrance/exit door placement.
The first two weeks of August will include finishing work on the new mechanical systems, placing and leveling sand over the ammonia piping, and installing fabric and insulation layers for the ice surface. At the end of the month, dasher boards, dasher glass, netting and players benches will be set. Rubber flooring will be installed around the rink, a new scoreboard will be installed, and we will begin to make ice.
Ice Arena Lobby Renovation:
Redesign of the Arena Lobby will create complete ADA accessibility, increased locker room size, larger restrooms, a designated Welcome Desk and skate rental area, update office space, improved foot traffic flow, and a reconfigured party room.
Brickwork was completed at the end of July for all enclosed areas in the lobby, including locker rooms, restrooms, a skate room, the front desk and an administrative office. The beginning of August will be dedicated to installing glass windows and walls, framing the ceiling, placing light fixtures and locker room benches. Installing restroom and shower fixtures, completing electrical and fire alarm finishes, laying flooring, and hanging doors and signage will be the focus at the end of August.
The exterior walls will not be moved or knocked down; however, larger patio space at both entrances will include more plant life, a bigger common area for benches and picnic tables, a designated drop-off area, improved traffic flow, a refinished parking lot, and increased green space within the parking lot.
The majority of the exterior construction will occur within the month of August. First, storefront door systems will be framed, installed and caulked. By mid-August, concrete foundations for the upper and lower patios will be poured, along with a retaining wall and planters. The end of the month will include projects such as curb, gutter and sidewalk work, asphalt paving of the parking lot, landscaping, and sign replacement.
New equipment, furniture and facilities are included in the renovation. New multi-purpose room furniture, a demonstration kitchen, and small fitness equipment will be introduced in the Community Center. In the Ice Arena, new bleacher seating, a heating system for patrons, a new score clock, new dasher boards, a new wall mural, and new skates in select sizes will be featured.
Nearly all of these amenities will be installed at the end of August, directly before the Grand Re-Opening Ceremony.
Bench and Shade Structure
Memorial Park: Toddler Playground
Driven by citizen request, this project will give adults a shaded place near the playground to sit and supervise children. Construction will only last week, and the structure will be very similar to the bench/shade components at Oak Tree Playground.
Brentwood Trail System:
Over 6,000 linear feet of trail will be milled and overlaid with new asphalt. This affects paved trail in Memorial Park, Oak Tree Park, Hanley Park, and the Lee Wynn Trail. The trail resurfacing project is part of the Parks System Master Plan. When the project is complete, all paved trails in Brentwood will have been improved since 2013.
